According to Wikipedia - Mesothelioma is a form of carcinoma of the mesothelium lining lungs or abdomen or heart; usually associated with exposure to asbestos dust. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs.

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. Washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can also put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) is a non-profit organization that funds mesothelioma research, provides services to patients, educates the public, and advocates in Washington, DC for governmental funding for mesothelioma research. The organization's mission is to eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending disease.

To date, the Foundation has funded over $5 million in clinical research and is the host of the annual International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma.

There was an article in the Sunday Times during May, 2007 by Dr Andrew Lawson, a 50 year old hospital consultant in Berkshire. Andrew has recently been diagnosed as having a mesothelioma.

One of the leading mesothelioma experts is Professor Tom Treasure of Guy’s Hospital. He says - "The peak of the epidemic is expected in 2015 to 2020 when the death rate is likely to be 2,000 per year in the UK.

The epidemic in the United States has probably peaked because of earlier awareness and action on asbestos imports,” he added. “Many countries are seeing the rising tide of an epidemic, and all doctors need to know how to recognize and diagnose this disease and what treatments are available.
